Who will step up?

The emergence of Darius Willis last year gave hoosier fans a lot to look forward to in the future. I think it was when Darius busted out that long TD run against Michigan at the big house, when the game was on the line, that I knew he had arrived. I think it is safe to say that Willis will be the starting back next season. However, he has shown in the past that sometimes he has to miss some time due to injuries. Not only is it very important that Willis stay healthy next year but it is also important that we can have a viable back up running back just in case. Even if Willis doesn't get hurt it would be nice to have a change of pace back that can produce when Willis needs a breather. So who can fill that role?

My pick to click is going to be red shirt freshman Nick Turner. This kid flew under the radar during the high school recruiting phase mostly because he didn't play football his junior season. He returned to football for his senior year and was the Marion County Player of the Year. This red shirt season has allowed him to get acclimated to the offense and get stronger in the weight room. What I like most about this kid is his speed. All he needs is a small opening to take off to the next level. I am very anxious to see how he does in spring practice because I think he would be a great change of pace back for Willis.

The most experienced running back will be Trea Burgess. He is much bigger and is an ideal 3rd down back. He can be used in short yardage situations and when we get close to the goal line. I think he also plays a vital role in the offense but I think if Turner continues to develop that Turner would be a better fit to get more carries.

Spring practice is right around the corner and the competition for the back up running back spot should be something you keep an eye on.
