Possible NFL Position Changes

While listening to many combine interviews with our hoosiers the possibility of them changing positions came up a handful of times. Let's start with Jammie Kirlew. Many scouts asked him if he got drafted into a 3-4 defense if he would switch to outside linebacker. When talking with Greg Middleton the issue of bulking up a bit and moving inside to defensive tackle was also a possibility. Other people said that if left tackle doesn't work out for Saffold then the possibility of moving inside to guard might be an option.

If any of the hoosiers are going to change positions in the NFL the most likely option I feel would be Middleton. He expressed the fact during the combine that he will do whatever any NFL team wants him to do. He is around the 270 lb range and I think the move is more feasible than other hoosiers.
I think the Kirlew switch to outside linebacker probably is less likely to happen. He doesn't have much experience not having his hand in the ground. He would probably have to get a little quicker and possibly slim down. I like him at the DE position anyway. He has good technique and multiple moves to get to the quarterback.
I could see Saffold moving inside to guard but I'm sure he will be drafted to start out at left tackle. The left tackle position is so important in protecting the quarterback and many teams in this years draft are looking for tackles. Saffold brings 4 years of experience and he clearly showed at the combine he was one of the most athletic lineman. The biggest reason why I still think tackle is better for him is that his pass protecting skills are much more developed than his run blocking skills.

Moral of the story, don't be surprised if throughout training camp you read about some hoosiers trying out other spots. By being flexible and open to other positions it can only help them in the draft.
